“O Mio Babbino Caro” Aria by Puccini . . . . Solo Fingerpicking arrangement by Ukulele Mike Lynch . . . .

“O Mio Babbino Caro” (“Oh My Beloved Father”) is a soprano aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi (1918), by Giacomo Puccini, to a libretto by Giovacchino Forzano. It is sung by Lauretta after tensions between her father Schicchi and the family of Rinuccio, the boy she loves, have reached a breaking point that threatens to separate her from Rinuccio. It provides an interlude expressing lyrical simplicity and single-hearted love in contrast with the atmosphere of hypocrisy, jealousy, double-dealing and feuding in the medieval Florence of Puccini’s only comedy, and it provides the only set-piece in the through-composed opera.
The aria was first performed at the premiere of Gianni Schicchi on 14 December 1918 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York by the popular Victorian English soprano Florence Easton. It has been sung subsequently by many sopranos. Dame Joan Hammond won a Gold Record in 1969 for 1 million sold copies of this aria.
The aria is frequently performed in concerts and as an encore in recitals by many popular and crossover singers; it is used in films and several bands cover the aria in their own style. The song is arguably far more well-known than the opera from which it comes
Below is a short excerpt from “O Mio Babbino Caro”

Notice the repetitive triplet pattern. This is carried throughout the entire piece. The right hand fingering is noted under the first measure. Thumb is indicated by the letter p. Index finger by the letter I. Middle finger by the letter m.

From Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” ballet . . .
“Simple Gifts” is a Shaker song written and composed in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett. It has endured many inaccurate descriptions. Though often classified as an anonymous Shaker hymn or as a work song, it is better classified as a dance song. The tune was written by Joseph Brackett (1797–1882) in 1848. Brackett, a lifelong resident of Maine, first joined the Shakers at Gorham, Maine, when his father’s farm helped to form the nucleus of a new Shaker settlement.
I did a highly acclaimed fingerpicking arrangement of this song 3 years ago and is found in my Solo Ukulele Instrumentals 2013 fingerpicking collection enlarged edition. . . But more recently, I decided to try it as a Chord/Melody arrangement and discovered it worked incredibly well in that format as well . . . As you may know, Chord/Melody arrangements are…
