This piece is an excellent fingerpicking challenge. . . . it has a feeling of perpetual motion in that the main rhythmic triplet figure runs throughout the entire piece.

According to Wikipedia . . .”Annie’s Song” (also known as “Annie’s Song (You Fill Up My Senses)”) is a folk rock country song recorded and written by singer-songwriter John Denver. The song was released as a single from Denver’s album, Back Home Again. It was his second number-one song in the United States, occupying that spot for two weeks in July 1974. “Annie’s Song” also went to number one on the Easy Listening chart. Billboard ranked it as the No. 25 song for 1974.It went to number one in the United Kingdom, where it was Denver’s only major hit single (many of Denver’s American hits were more familiar in the UK through cover versions by other artists). Four years later, an instrumental version also became flutist James Galway‘s only major British hit.
“Annie’s Song” was written as an ode to Denver’s wife at the time, Annie Martell Denver. Denver “wrote this song in July 1973 in about ten-and-a-half minutes one day on a ski lift” to the top of Ajax Mountain in Aspen, Colorado, as the physical exhilaration of having “just skied down a very difficult run” and the feeling of total immersion in the beauty of the colors and sounds that filled all senses inspired him to think about his wife. Annie Denver recalls the beginnings: “It was written after John and I had gone through a pretty intense time together and things were pretty good for us. He left to go skiing and he got on the Ajax chair on Aspen mountain and the song just came to him. He skied down and came home and wrote it down… Initially it was a love song and it was given to me through him, and yet for him it became a bit like a prayer.”“The first time I heard ‘Annie’s Song,’ I told John it had the same melody as Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, Second Movement,” says Milt Okun. “He walked over to the piano, sat for an hour and came back, and the only thing remaining from Tchaikovsky was the first five notes. It was fantastic.”
I had done a full fingerpicking arrangement of “Annie’s Song” back in 2013 for the Solo Ukulele Instrumentals Fingerpicking collection (Enhanced edition) but later I discovered it also worked equally well as a Chord/Melody tune. . . Try the little clip of the opening measure of the song below . . .

One of the cool things about this arrangement is that there is virtually no BARRING. . . That’s very rare in any solo ukulele instrumental. That makes this an excellent piece for beginning solo ukulele performers . .

“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” is a popular English lullaby. The lyrics are from an early 19th-century English poem by Ann Taylor, “The Star”. The poem, which is in couplet form, was first published in 1806 in Rhymes for the Nursery, a collection of poems by Taylor and her sister Ann. It is sung to the tune of the French melody Ah! vous dirai-je, maman, which was published in 1761 and later arranged by several composers including Mozart with Twelve Variations on “Ah vous dirai-je, Maman”. The English lyrics have five stanzas, although only the first is widely known. It has a Roud Folk Song Index number of 7666. This song is usually performed in the key of C Major. The song is in the public domain, and has many adaptations around the world.
Although a simple and classic children’s lullaby, this song is an excellent introduction to Chord/Melody solo ukulele performance. . . . This arrangement is in TWO keys. . . starting out in the Key of F then going to the Key of G. Try out the short excerpts below . . .

From Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” ballet . . .
“Simple Gifts” is a Shaker song written and composed in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett. It has endured many inaccurate descriptions. Though often classified as an anonymous Shaker hymn or as a work song, it is better classified as a dance song. The tune was written by Joseph Brackett (1797–1882) in 1848. Brackett, a lifelong resident of Maine, first joined the Shakers at Gorham, Maine, when his father’s farm helped to form the nucleus of a new Shaker settlement.
I did a highly acclaimed fingerpicking arrangement of this song 3 years ago and is found in my Solo Ukulele Instrumentals 2013 fingerpicking collection enlarged edition. . . But more recently, I decided to try it as a Chord/Melody arrangement and discovered it worked incredibly well in that format as well . . . As you may know, Chord/Melody arrangements are generally more easily accessible for solo players since no fingerpicking is involved. . . . only the strum of the thumb . . . . Try the short excerpts below and I think you’ll be surprised at how easy this song is to play. . . Great tune for beginning solo ukulele players . . .

Notice all of the “zeros” . . . that means those strings are played but no left hand fingers are place on the strings. . most of the melody rides on the FIRST string . . . the melody goes all the way up on the FIRST string to the 10th Fret . . . Looks really impressive in performance . . .
Below is a short clip of the BRIDGE section . . .

Performance by Jake Shimabukuro from the “GRAND UKULELE” CD
My arrangement of “AKAKA FALLS” was inspired by Jake but is a bit more scaled down for the average player . . . It is a fingerpicking arrangement unlike the many Chord/Melody tunes I’ve done most recently. Below are several short excerpts for you to try. . .
Example ONE

Notice the “Hammer On” in the first measure . . . This is done by playing the 5th fret note on the second string, then striking the 7th fret following that without picking it. . . It takes some patience and lot’s of practice to get that technique. . . I’ll be doing a YouTube video on both the “Hammer On” and the “Pull Off” soon.
Example TWO

Those squiggly lines simply tell us to slowly roll those chords. . . starting from the 4th string and ascending to the first. . . a slow roll to give it a “harp” – like effect. Also note that we have a BARRE chord at the beginning of the first measure on the second stave. This is accomplished by barring across all 4 strings at the 7th fret with the index finger while placing the middle finger on the 8th fret of the first string.
Example THREE

“AKAKA FALLS” is not currently available in any Ukulele Mike collection . . . It can, however be purchased separately by making a payment of $5.39 through the paypal button on the Ukulele Mike website: http://www.ukulelemikelynch.com . . . When you make the payment, PayPal should give you the option of letting us know which tablature you want. . . then it will be personally emailed to you within the day.
