According to Wikipedia, we learn that
“Autumn Leaves” is a much-recorded popular song. Originally it was a 1945 French song “Les feuilles mortes” (literally “The Dead Leaves”) with music by Hungarian-French composer Joseph Kosma and lyrics by poet Jacques Prévert, and the Hungarian title is “Hulló levelek” (Falling Leaves). Yves Montand (with Irène Joachim) introduced “Les feuilles mortes” in 1946 in the film Les Portes de la nuit.
Like all of the selections in the new 52 Song CHORD/MELODY eBook, AUTUMN LEAVES uses the thumb only. . . No fingerpicking is involved. The most distinctive aspect of this arrangement is that you not only have the chord/melody format but also a rhythmic pulse that keeps the piece moving forward. The use of chords strummed between the melody also help the ukulele sustain more. It is important to emphasize the melodic part and play down the intermediate chords. If everything is played at the same volume level, the piece will sound choppy. This piece needs to be played freely with lots of “RUBATO” .. . . Don’t rush . take the sections easy and the song
will have that sweet wistful feeling.

I had a ukulele player tell me that my arrangement of EDELWEISS was perfect for a summer’s day on the back porch swing. . . Here again is another one of those kind of pleasant laid back summer evening pieces to learn. Like EDELWEISS it is fairly accessible for moderately advanced beginners thru intermediate players. If you are insterested in creating some of your own ukulele instrumentals keep in mind that the key of F is quite good for that. . . G and C are also good, but F is supremely good for the uke.
In this arrangement I decided to us a Chord/Melody style. It works SO well with the Chord/Melody technique. No fingerpicking involved. . . simply strum the chords and pick the individual melody notes with the thumb. Below is a short excerpt of TAMMY to illustrate how the standard treble clef notation and the tablature appear in this arrangement.
Yes, I know I’ve been inconsistent with the way I spell “BACHELOR” Spelling on the top image is correct . . on the video NOT. . . oh well, I try.

“You Are My Sunshine” is a popular song written by Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell. and first recorded in 1939. It has been declared one of the state songs of Louisiana as a result of its association with former state governor and country music singer Jimmie Davis. According to a 1990 article by Theodore Pappas, the original song was written by Oliver Hood.
The song has been covered numerous times — so often, in fact, that it is “one of the most commercially programmed numbers in American popular music.” The song, originally country music, has “virtually lost” its original country music identity, and “represent[s] both the national flowering of country music and its eventual absorption into the mainstream of American popular culture.” In 1941, it was covered by Gene Autry, Bing Crosby, Mississippi John Hurt and Lawrence Welk. In subsequent years, it was covered by Ike and Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Cash, Brian Wilson, and Andy Williams, amongst many others.
The 1940 version by Davis has been added to the National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress on March 21, 2013 for long-term preservation.
YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE is the last song in my new 52 Song CHORD/MELODY eBook but it’s stands as probably the best FIRST song to learn from this collection. I barely goes out of the first three frets . . . no up the fingerboard chords. I uses just three or four basic chords so this is a good solo piece for newbie players. Below is a short excerpt . Give it a try.

Free tablature download: “SMILE” by Charlie Chaplin – Chord/Melody arrangement for ukulele by Ukulele Mike Lynch
UKULELE MIKE LYNCH - All things UKULELE
“Smile” is a song based on an instrumental theme used in the soundtrack for the 1936 Charlie Chaplin movie Modern Times. Chaplin composed the music, while John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added the lyrics and title in 1954.In the lyrics, based on lines and themes from the film, the singer is telling the listener to cheer up and that there is always a bright tomorrow, just as long as they smile. “Smile” has become a popular standard since its original use in Chaplin’s film.
This song has always had a special place in my musical soul. There is just something so universal about its message and the elegant, simple melody that came from the creative genius of Charlie Chaplin perfectly matches the lyrical sentiments. I had great joy in arranging this for solo ukulele. I decided to do it in a simple chord/melody fashion and I think this approach fits…

From Wikipedia, here is what we can learn about the song “LOVE IS BLUE”
“L’amour est bleu” (English title: “Love Is Blue”) is a song whose music was composed by André Popp, and whose lyrics were written by Pierre Cour, in 1967. Brian Blackburn later wrote English-language lyrics for it. First performed in French by Greek singer Vicky Leandros (appearing as Vicky) as the Luxembourgian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1967, it has since been recorded by many other musicians, most notably French orchestra leader Paul Mauriat, whose familiar instrumental version became the only number-one hit by a French artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 in America.
The song describes the pleasure and pain of love in terms of colours (blue and grey) and elements (water and wind). The English lyrics (“Blue, blue, my world is blue …”) focus on colours only (blue, grey, red, green, and black), using them to describe elements of lost love. The English version by Vicky Leandros also appeared as “Colours of Love” in some locations including the UK.
LOVE IS BLUE works quite nicely as a Chord/Melody arrangement and as always we use only the thumb of the right hand. . . No fingerpicking is needed in this piece. In playing solo instrumental pieces on the ukulele we often play only 2 or 3 strings. It’s quite unlike strumming accompaniment for singing where we typically strike all four strings throughout the song. In this style of playing we are asked to be selective. . . to play only those strings that provided the melody and proper harmony for each beat of music. In the short opening example below, note that the first beat plays only the 1st 2nd and 3rd strings. The 4th strings is not played. Therefore, one needs to be careful and pay close attention to the tablature provided in the eBook.

Play the chords in a gentle harp-like roll and as always try to play more up toward the fingerboard for that is where we can get the warmest, sweetest sound from the uke.

“Fly Me to the Moon”, originally titled “In Other Words”, is a popular song written in 1954 by Bart Howard. Kaye Ballard made the first recording of the song in 1954. Since then it has become a frequently recorded jazz standard often featured in popular culture. Frank Sinatra’s 1964 version was closely associated with the Apollo missions to the Moon.
In 1999 The USA based Songwriters Hall of Fame recognized the importance of “Fly Me to the Moon” by inducting it as a “Towering Song” which is an award “…presented each year to the creators of an individual song that has influenced our culture in a unique way over many years.”
“Fly Me To The Moon” sounds best when it “swings”, however, in my chord/melody arrangement I have laid it out as a pretty straightforward piece with easily understood time values for the notes. After one masters the notes then you can add that special element that makes it “SWING”.
Below is an excerpt from the sheet music that’s included in my new CHORD/MELODY eBook.
Watch and listen to the VIMEO video of FLY ME TO THE MOON
At the very end of the piece I add a special twist by adding a Cmaj7 chord up high on the fretboard. I do this by barring my index finger across the 5th fret, then barring my ring finger across the first three strings of the seventh fret. Once could also play the Cmaj7 simply by placing the index finger on the second fret of the first string. I personally like the higher one as it seems to add more dramatic flair to the end sound. Give it a try. . .

This what we know, historically, about the well known song Greensleeves . . .
“Greensleeves” is a traditional English folk song and tune, over a ground either of the form called a romanesca or of its slight variant, the passamezzo antico.
A broadside ballad by this name was registered at the London Stationer’s Company in September 1580,] by Richard Jones, as “A Newe Northen Dittye of ye Ladye Greene Sleves”. Six more ballads followed in less than a year, one on the same day, 3 September 1580 (“Ye Ladie Greene Sleeves answere to Donkyn hir frende” by Edward White), then on 15 and 18 September (by Henry Carr and again by White), 14 December (Richard Jones again), 13 February 1581 (Wiliam Elderton), and August 1581 (White’s third contribution, “Greene Sleeves is worne awaie, Yellow Sleeves Comme to decaie, Blacke Sleeves I holde in despite, But White Sleeves is my delighte”). It then appears in the surviving A Handful of Pleasant Delights (1584) as A New Courtly Sonnet of the Lady Green Sleeves. To the new tune of Green Sleeves.
