I thoroughly enjoyed assembling the song collection. These songs represent some of the best of
Popular Music in the early 20th century. This is our legacy in music history. Let’s celebrate these songs by sharing them with our families and friends. How about taking them to the local senior center or to anywhere people gather for fun. I’ve arranged these songs in ukulele friendly keys and each song indicates the chords used and in addition to that, suggested strumming patterns. I’ve also indicated the opening note for each song to assist in getting it right.

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM – Ukulele Chord/Melody arrangement from the 33 Song Christmas Chord/Melody eBook from Ukulele Mike Lynch

Little Town of Bethlehem is a popular Christmas carol. The text was written by Phillips Brooks (1835–1893), an Episcopal priest, Rector of the Church of the Holy Trinity, Philadelphia. He was inspired by visiting the Palestinian city of Bethlehem in 1865. Three years later, he wrote the poem for his church and his organist, Lewis Redner, added the music.
Below is an original hand manuscript of the poem
By Phillips Brooks

This seemed so natural as a Chord/Melody arrangement. . . For those of us who might not
wish to sing but allow the ukulele to “sing” the melody for us, then Chord/Melody playing is
just the ticket. Only the thumb is used . . No fingerpicking involved. Look at the short
clip below. Notice that in the third measure we have a series of chords that are all built on
the C major chord. I’ve frequently been asked for the “chords” needed to play the solo instrumental pieces. Simply indicating the traditional C major chord which is 0003 just doesn’t do the job. This is where tablature shines. For example, the third chord in that 3rd measure is a C chord but it only involves playing the 4th, 3rd and 2nd strings . . 000 . . . No first string is played. This is where we depart radically from the norm of strumming songs. We are asked by the arrangement to be specific as to which strings to play.

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM is included in the 33 Song Christmas Chord/Melody eBook. . .
It can be purchased by making a payment of $19.95 through the paypal donate button on the
Ukulele Mike website: http://www.ukulelemikelynch.com
Note that it will be emailed to you within the day as a pdf file. It is not a hard copy book
as you might see in some of my video tutorials. Some people actually keep it as a digital file and use their computers or tablets as “music stand”.
I also offer a discount when purchasing both this Christmas Chord/Melody collection as well
as the 2011 Ukulele Christmas eBook. . . $35.95 for the two ebooks.

According to Wikipedia we find that We Wish You a Merry Christmas” is a popular sixteenth-century English carol from the West Country of England. The origin of this Christmas carol lies in the English tradition wherein wealthy people of the community gave Christmas treats to the carolers on Christmas Eve, such as figgy puddings that were very much like modern-day Christmas puddings. It is one of the few English traditional carols that makes mention of the New Year celebration and is often the last song carolers sing, wishing all good tidings and happy spirits at Christmastime.
This arrangement which I have done in a Chord/Melody format was done in large part for myself.
You see, I am “digitally challenged” . . . Meaning, I have very short stubby fingers. How I’ve ever been able to play the piano and all of the stringed instruments as well as I do is beyond me. I have a daily struggle to get these little fingers to do what I want them to do. Therefore, I have to do continuous excercises and drills to get them to cooperate. This arrangement employs a lot of fairly large skips, intervals, finger stretches etc. So, doing this piece at a very slow tempo over and over and over again has proven to be an excellent exercise for me. Perhaps those who are blessed with longer fingers will have an easy time of it, but I bet
there are plenty of people who might just benefit from learning this piece and playing daily as
a great finger exercise. Below is a short snippet to illustrate the chord/melody format. Keep in mind, there is no fingerpicking involved in chord/melody playing. . . Just the right thumb.

The Christmas Chord/Melody ebook is available for purchase by making a payment of $19.95 through the paypal donate button on the Ukulele Mike website: http://www.ukulelemikelynch.com

UKULELE MIKE LYNCH - All things UKULELE
From Wikipedia, here is what we can learn about the song “LOVE IS BLUE”
“L’amour est bleu” (English title: “Love Is Blue”) is a song whose music was composed by André Popp, and whose lyrics were written by Pierre Cour, in 1967. Brian Blackburn later wrote English-language lyrics for it. First performed in French by Greek singer Vicky Leandros (appearing as Vicky) as the Luxembourgian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1967, it has since been recorded by many other musicians, most notably French orchestra leader Paul Mauriat, whose familiar instrumental version became the only number-one hit by a French artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 in America.
The song describes the pleasure and pain of love in terms of colours (blue and grey) and elements (water and wind). The English lyrics (“Blue, blue, my world is blue …”) focus on colours only (blue, grey, red, green, and black)…

accompaniment for singing, but in time and with patience, you
WILL become adept at reading this form of notation. It does take
time and please be patient with yourself. Plan a practical approach
to practice time. Select a short achievable amount of music
for the allotted time. For instance, choose 3 or 4 measures.
Learn the part then memorize and move on.
Then next day go to the next group of measures.
Within a short time you’ll find yourself playing these simple classic songs.
At all times, remember to have fun and as always . . .

Some have already asked, how does this book differ from the “A UKULELE CHRISTMAS” which I released in 2011? Well, this new collection is ENTIRELY in Chord/Melody format. The previous 2011 collection relies largely on more elaborate fingerpicking arrangement. They are equally fine pieces and well worth learning. The 2011 collection also contains a 2nd book of simple strumming accompaniment Christmas songs. Great for holiday gatherings and sing a longs.

“TAMMY” from the motion picture TAMMY AND THE BACHELOR – Solo ukulele chord/melody arrangement by Ukulele Mike Lynch – included in the new 52 Song CHORD/MELODY eBook
UKULELE MIKE LYNCH - All things UKULELE

I had a ukulele player tell me that my arrangement of EDELWEISS was perfect for a summer’s day on the back porch swing. . . Here again is another one of those kind of pleasant laid back summer evening pieces to learn. Like EDELWEISS it is fairly accessible for moderately advanced beginners thru intermediate players. If you are insterested in creating some of your own ukulele instrumentals keep in mind that the key of F is quite good for that. . . G and C are also good, but F is supremely good for the uke.
In this arrangement I decided to us a Chord/Melody style. It works SO well with the Chord/Melody technique. No fingerpicking involved. . . simply strum the chords and pick the individual melody notes with the thumb. Below is a short excerpt of TAMMY to illustrate how the standard treble clef notation and the tablature…
